On July 6, 2002, about 1200 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), an Airbus A320-212, French registration F-GFKS, operated by Air France, experienced an uncontained engine failure of the no. 2 engine during takeoff from runway 26D at the Charles De Gaulle International Airport in Paris, France. The airplane was equipped with CFM-56 engines, and the failure occurred in the high-pressure compressor stage. The engine and airframe were substantially damaged. As a result of the engine failure, the flight crew rejected the takeoff and came to rest safely on runway 26D. The investigation is being conducted by the French Bureau Enquetes-Accidents (BEA) in accordance with Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
