The overhauled engine installation and structural work had recently been performed, and the follow-on test flight remained in the traffic pattern returning for a landing, due to a fuel leak caused by improper fuel cap installation. During the subsequent flight, soon after takeoff at about 300 feet agl, the engine failed and the aircraft crashed. There was no postcrash fire.
