On May 24, 2014, about 1030 central daylight time, a Smythe Kitfox Classic IV experimental, amateur-built airplane, N998DS, impacted terrain after takeoff from a private airstrip near Slaughter, Louisiana. The pilot was not injured; however, the passenger sustained serious injuries. The airplane was substantially damaged. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, which was not operated on a flight plan. The flight was originating at the time of the accident.
