On May 27, 2004, about 0700 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC), a Cessna A185F amphibious airplane, Indonesian registration PK-YME, struck a power pole and was substantially damaged during a forced landing near Pontianak, Indonesia. The forced landing was precipitated by a loss of engine power during an instrument approach to the Pontianak Airport (PNK). The pilot and one passenger received minor injuries, and the four other passengers received no injuries. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The flight, which was chartered by a missionary organization, had departed from Kalansam, Indonesia, about 1600, and was destined for PNK.
According to information provided by the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC), the pilot reported that the engine began losing power at an altitude of about 4,800 feet above mean sea level (msl) while the airplane was flying through turbulence and rain. The pilot stated that he attempted to regain full engine power while flying about 70 knots, but was not successful. About 2,000 feet msl, the engine lost all power. At 800 feet above the ground, the airplane broke out of the clouds and the pilot attempted a forced landing onto a city street. The engine installed on the airplane was a Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) model IO-550-D. The NTSC shipped the accident engine to the United States for a detailed examination at TCM under Safety Board supervision.
The investigation is currently being conducted by the Indonesia NTSC. Requests for additional information should be made to:
