Internship Opportunities at the Safety Board

Office of Aviation Safety

Description of Program: The Office of Aviation Safety has internship opportunities available throughout the year for undergraduate and graduate students with aviation backgrounds. These internships are located in the Office of Aviation Safety's various Regional and Field Offices. These internships are offered on an unpaid basis under the provisions of the Student Volunteer Program. These internships, which last approximately three to four months, provide aviation students with a hands-on work experience directly related to the aviation industry. These internships allow aviation students an opportunity to explore aviation career options as well as develop personal and professional skills. Occasionally, depending on the availability of funds, a student volunteer may be hired back the following year into a paid position under the provisions of the NTSB's Cooperative Education Program. These paid COOP positions may then lead to a permanent position with the NTSB upon graduation.

Description of work: Interns will work under the direction of an NTSB aviation accident investigator and assist them in conducting selected accident/incident investigations. This includes assisting in the on-scene portion of the investigation as well as conducting the post-accident research needed to develop the accident sequence of events and proposed probable cause of the accident. Interns will also write preliminary accident reports and assist in writing final factual reports and briefs. A copy of the Position Description for a Student Volunteer can be found on the NTSB web site.

Qualification Requirements: In order to qualify for these internships, students should have completed at least 2 years (60 credits) of college level work with at least a "B" (3.0) or better academic average. Students should also hold a least a private pilot license and have at least 50 hours of pilot-in-command (PIC) flight time. Students who hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating and 200 hours of PIC time are preferred. Helicopter PIC time is also desirable. If possible, students should have completed a college level course in technical writing and have some employment or service experience with a campus organization that demonstrates leadership capability.

How to Apply: Applications must be submitted within the following time frames:

Tour of Duty: Application Cutoff Date:

Summer (May through August) February 15th

Fall (September through December) June 15th

Spring (January through April) September 15th

The application should consist of a resume listing all relevant work experience, academic courses and grades, pilot licenses and certificates, hours flown by make and model of aircraft. An application form (OF-612) and Record of Aeronautical Experience (OPM form 1170) can be downloaded from the NTSB web site to provide this information.

Where to apply: Applications should be mailed directly to the NTSB Regional or Field Office that is located in the area where the student is interested in working.
