NTSB SEPTEMBER 17th BOARD MEETING: TWO SANDY HOOK NJ FERRY ACCIDENTS, OKLAHOMA
HAZMAT RELEASE ON AGENDA
The National Transportation Safety Board holds a public Board meeting Tuesday, September 17, at 9:30 a.m., in its Board Room and Conference Center, 426 LEnfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C.
There are three items on the agenda:
1) January 4, 2001, passenger vessel Finest, with 264 persons aboard, ran aground
outside the channel to the Shrewsbury River, Sandy Hook, New Jersey. The vessel
was traveling from New York City to Highlands, New Jersey. There were no injuries.
Safety issues include adequacy of navigational procedures, and adequacy of navigational

2) September 28, 2001, fire aboard passenger vessel Seastreak New York, in Sandy
Hook, New Jersey. The vessel was traveling from Highlands, New Jersey to New
York City with 204 persons aboard when fire broke out in the engine room. There
were no injuries and damage was estimated at $81,000. Safety issues include
crew firefighting response and company maintenance and inspection procedures.

3) On May 1, 2001 a tractor-trailer carrying cylinders filled with compressed
hydrogen, a flammable gas, struck a pick-up truck on U.S. Highway 75 near Ramona,
Oklahoma. Hydrogen gas was released and ignited. The accident killed the tractor-trailer
driver and caused the evacuation of 5 area homes. NTSB Media Contact: Lauren
